Where does the phrase "holy smokes" come from?

Question:My friend and her daughter went to Catholic Mass recently. The priest walked down the aisle with incense holder and the incense burning leaving a trail of white smoke. My friend's daughter asked her if this is where the phrase "holy smokes" came from. Now we're searching frantically for an answer, but no one seems to know. Please help!

Answers:
Welcome to the world of Catholic traditions! "Holy Smoke" is a "corruption" of "Holy Ghost." Since using God's name in vain is considered sinful, people have come up with ways to alter the words to try to make them less offensive and more acceptable. "Jeez" is used for "Jesus". My uncle would always say "Holy Christmas" rather than "Christ," thinking it was not as blasphemous.
