i have an idea on what it means, but how to elaborate on it and expand my ideas?
Answers:
You only know the strength of some force when you oppose it. This can be a political force, an ideological force, a societal force, etc. The point is, unless you are in opposition, (swimming against the stream) you don't really know how strong the force is. I think this is particularly relevant to those who decide to step out of "going with the flow." It can be a surprise when you try to go the other direction. A recent good example is when the Dixie Chicks spoke against Bush. All the sudden they found themselves swimming against the stream.
If you're swimming WITH the flow of the stream - it's easy - there is no resistance. But when you're swimming AGAINST the stream - you know how strong the current can be.
look on google. that's what it's there for. no-one can really answer this one because you've been quite vague. what's the context of the quote, for example? at what time did wilson say it?
The simple view is that if you are travelling with the tide there is nothing to really tell you how fast you may br travelling. It's only when you oppose the tide (of opinion) that you will experience how strong that belief really is.
To put another slant on it You may have a lot of 'supporters' who suddenly melt away when they come up against any opposition.
I wouldn't know since I'm more of a "go with the flow" kinda guy. Didn't Wilson end up working himself into a stroke? I don't mean the swimming kind, either.
The person who stands up and opposed a prevalent idea understands the true strength of it. Someone who never starts the swim will never be able to understand the strength of the current. It is easier to ask someone to oppose an idea - but its more difficult to do it urself.
But as with any other quotation, you can interpret it in your own way.
To expand on the theme of this quotation I'd do a short "compare and contrast" paper. I'd list (in my head or where I can-rewrite) all the natural elements that this Wilson quote brings to my mind.
Might be the ocean, or moving in snow, or in driving rain... just something that moves that i would move through... like in the quote, but I'd move either the same way or opposite (moving against or moving with), and write about it in three short paragraphs. Beginning, middle and end.

to me it means someone that has struggled in life knows how it feels and lives to tell how to get over the struggle themselves. that is what i got from it
Here is one possible meaning that may apply to today and be a decent subject for an essay: It means that we all walk around thinking that others' lives are easier than ours. People criticize our lives and tell us we should do things this way or that way, or that we have it very easy, but only we are aware of the struggles we are going through. Only you, the person in your actual shoes, understands what you are going through, including the private struggles that you hold internally as life comes at you. People can try to put themselves in others' shoes, so to speak, and while that is admirable, still, the only person who knows the true difficulty of something is the person actually in the situation. Here is one example: the President of a company may decide that he must lay off 300 people in his large company. The whole community will say that he is evil, that they have nowhere to turn to, that he is being unfair, etc. However, only the President of the company may know that this had to be done in order for the company to survive financially. If he hadn't layed off the 300 people, all 600 people in the company would have lost their jobs because the company would have gone bankrupt. Only he saw the financial statements that proved this, only he struggled many nights figuring out what else he could do so that everyone could hold on to their job; only he knew that his heart truly felt sad when this had to be done. I hope that helps. As well, check out the website below to learn a little about Woodrow Wilson so that you can include something about him personally in your answer, like something about the decisions he had to make revolving around WWI and perhaps how those decisions were criticized by the public. Good luck!
a few things. if u go aganst hte current u understand just how powerful it could be. but the current could be peer pressure, or some1 being different. like martin luther king jr. he led the fight for african americans to have rights when they werent given many, sit in the back of the bus, seperate waterfountains enterances/exits. so if u take king, the stream is the rascism he fought and the hurdles he had to jump. but also, ppl who supported him and the strength of support. so the stream doesnt nessicarily have to deal with something bad, but something good. especally if the outcome of swimming against the current is a sandy bank
It kind of relates to being an individual. Going against what society dictates makes you a strong person because you can handle the opposition. You do not mind what other people say about you. It makes you strong in mind (you have will power).
JB and Girl in love have it.
You know how strong the opposition because you hav estood against it, and can gauge it. How would you fully understand it's strength unless you pushed against it.
It is a metaphor.
