i think his best is a tale of two cities. most critics would probably choose david copperfield. great expectations is also very good. i have a special fondness for oliver twist, because the musical of oliver is the very first live theatrical performance that i can ever remember seeing, but the book itself is not that great.
the amazing thing about dickens is that he's really the father of serial drama. without him, we wouldn't have soap operas today. he invented the radical plot twist, the notion of every person having a double, the inherent drama of the terminally ill, the disabled, and the reversal of fortune from rags to riches...
whatever you choose to read by him, i hope you enjoy it. he's a bit verbose, (he literally got paid by the word), with lots of run on sentences, broken up by awkward-comma-offset phrases and made-up-hyphenated-compound words (as well as parenthetical asides) over-explaining everything....
but i like his style a lot. i used to imitate it in my school writing until i realized that most other readers find it irritating. Dickens. Great Expectations is my favorite.
Dickens. Great Expectations is my favorite.
Pickwick Papers...
I prefer The Tale of Two Cities... It has it all...drama, romance, comedy, mystery, excitement...!!! I hope you enjoy whichever of his books you decide upon... **S**
It depends.
Are you used to reading, long 19th Century novels? If so, you can't go far wrong with Pickwick Papers or (if you can stand something which is angrier and sadder in places) Bleak House.
If not, Great Expectations is very good and shorter. Tale of Two Cities is good too and short, but it's not like any of his other books so it won't give you a good idea of his writing. Great Expectations
Dombey and Son
The Pickwick Papers
Nicholas Nickleby
A Tale of Two Cities
A Christmas Carol
Bleak House
David Copperfield
Little Dorrit
Hard Times
Oliver Twist
Our Mutual Friend
The Old Curiosity Shop I think A Tale of Two Cities was quite good.
Oliver Twist.............. very nice book!
I think his most famous are A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.
He was paid by the word, though-- those books are LONG. He was dope and everything, but the stories are about a third of what he wrote. The rest is straight description. My personal favorite is "A tale of Two Cities." Also, I think Great Expectations and Oliver Twist are great. All 3 of those were made into movies.
idk all of them
