How do you interpret this quote about passion?

Question:It is with our passions as it is with fire and water; they are good servants, but bad masters. ~Roger L'Estrange, Aesop's Fables, 1692

Answers:
Fire and water are ESSENTIALS to our life.
But as leaders they are terrible.
Fire has no control over its destiny
Water will flood, evaporate rain is controlled by the elements of mother nature. Water like Fire are hard to contain and manipulate, but can be done so if you are wise and careful.
But without the aid of humans... both Water and Fire will spread and seek their own destiny.

Passion without some sort of self discipline will seek its own destiny. But with a little bit of aid or guidance you can manipulate your destiny.

uhhh. that's all i think of D

Our passions can be both harmful and beneficial, just like fire and water. We need both of these things to live, but out of control they are very dangerous.
Like anything in life, things that make your life better tend to be good, the "servants".

Things that rule your life, the "masters" tend to ruin it.

If you allow a passion to take over your existence, it will not serve you as much as it ruins you. Another saying that applies is "All things in moderation, none to excess."

Drug addiction is a passion that has become a bad master. Religious zealotry is a passion that has become a bad master.

If you live only to serve a passion, you have become the servant and it has become the master.

Let me know what grade I get.
Both Fire and Water are alive, eating, growing, spreading, passions continue to run, fire hot and water smooth.Pleasure, desire, love, all will serve with out questions. But as masters, who can truly be total master of themselves.
PASSION the willingness to forsake all your worth for whomever or whatever you are passionate about!
Passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life. Hoffer,
they can help,or hinder,

Our passions are fickle and so we can't really count on them as the leader of our souls or our actions. One day I feel invigorated and I sail through my Mother's Rule. But on another, I am tired and unmotivated, and I can be tempted to slack off, give up, let it go, and sit and mope. All people go through this struggle to some extent, so it is normal and nothing to feel bad about.

Our passions are meant to tell us where we are at, but not meant to determine what we 'do' necessarily. Yes, we listen to their communication, and take into account the state of our fallen heart, but nonetheless, there are times when we've just got to work without them, or against them, and pray to God to change our hearts.

The functions of our souls are intellect and will, and so we need to decide to 'do what we ought' today, regardless of whether we 'feel good' about it. And if this is hard, maybe we move a little slower so as not to cause too much of a civil war, but we still move on -toward doing what we know God is asking of us.

To give into our passionate complaints does not free us -but instead can dump us into an passionate quagmire. Peace is found only in God's Will, not in pleasing ourselves.

In these times, if I have given into whim and passion, after having suffered the effects of such a surrender, the only solution for me is to get up, and start tidying that living room, offering it to God and asking for his help.

It is our wills which count most here. We do what we know God wants - to fulfill our 5 Ps -- and we focus on Him and do all for Him. He Himself will bring about our interior order as time passes.

The struggle is always hardest at the beginning, but by acting in conformity with what we know is good and true, we do our part in restoring internal order and peace.
