well based on the movie, the first quote would imply:
jaguar paw rather die on his feet, than live on his knees. j.p has too much willpower and determination to just give up and die without trying. Jaguar Paw finally starts to defeat the pursuers when he stops fearing and starts to fight back with resolution
whats meant to be is meant to be. the writer believes there is something beyond the physical, something that can be tapped into. If only something that men might call 'Destiny' Now, perhaps this was Gibson's intent, but I'm not so sure. The film's tagline of "No-one can outrun his destiny" to me suggests that the bigger picture is the almost utter destruction of the Aztec civilisation by the invaders.
Most of the above is best described as soldier talk and since it does not relate to life in general is pretty meaningless. I classify this sort of quote as Hollywood waffle.
The only quote regarding war which is worth remembering is as follows : -
"Only the dead shall know an end of war."
Aristotle.
Aristotle knew exactly what he was talking about since the City of Athena was in a state of perpetual war with it's enemies - other Greek states and the damned Persians.
Nothing much has changed then, except perhaps the date.
The argument about destiny has been thrashed to bits by the Greeks several thousands of years ago. Are we destined to act in a certain way and is our destiny mapped out before we are born. The Ancient Egyptians seem to have thought so and got into palmistry in a big way. By reading the lines on the palms of the hands, they believed it was possible to for-tell a persons future and also know their past including how long such a person might live.
Cross my palm with silver - is about all it is worth really.
