Revenge is a dish best served cold - what does this mean?

Question:

Answers:
cold as in cold hearted; without feelings.

I'm amazed I was called "retarded" and even "stupid" over an inaccurate assessment. Upon further research I discovered I wasn't 100% accurate and the meaning is actually waiting for when it's least expected, but wouldn't waiting when it's least expected mean "cold hearted?" Shame on the 2 people that spoke ill of me and the others.
It means revenge is COLD and cold in this case means MEAN
Cold (as in the emotion). Generally, if you're participating in revenge, that's what you are. :)
Heartlessly... no emotional reaction.
If you get revenge when it happens, you don't have time to premeditate, and you're still angry about it. The more you let your anger simmer and the more time you have to plan, the more satisfying the revenge is.
All I know is that it's very colddddd in spppaaacccceeeee!
It means that it is best to wait before dishing out revenge. You wait til the person least expects it.
I have always taken that quote to mean that you can be the most effective in getting your revenge, if you keep your emotions under control and dont lose your temper (hot-tempered).

Consider the other quote "You keep your friends close but your enemies closer". If your anger is in control, you could never keep your enemies close.
It means wait a while to get your revenge, when the other person isn't expecting it. It'll "taste" better that way!
The first 4 answers are retarded. It means, waiting to execute your revenge. Like the other person said, its best when they think things blew over and they are least expecting it.
It means don't immediately seek revenge (when something is "hot). It is better to wait and carefully plan when less emotional/hot...when it is least expected.
What it means is that revenge should be carried out not quickly, but carefully, precisely and when they least expect it. In other words, people usually like to eat their food(dish) hot after it's prepared. But when you serve the dish(take your revenge) on someone, it's better when the dish is cold because the person may have forgotten what they've done to you, thus making the vengeance sweeter by reminding them of what they did to tick you off in the first place.

In any case, you really shouldn't take revenge at all, unless it's just a practical joke or something lighthearted. Revenge can be petty and immature, and it puts you on the same level of the offender.
It means you should think things over, or "sleep on it" before doing anything rash. Once you calm down, you may not want that revenge so badly. If you act in the heat of the moment, you may regret it later.
I think that it means you should not act hastily in the "heat" of anger. If retaliation is your intent, take your action calmly and deliberately with forethought.
it means that you should wait to take your revenge. It is not somthing that you should rush into. It should be calculated and executed when your enemies least expect it.
if you want a go example of this read or watch ' the count of monte cristo'
the first four answers that you got were from stupid people. don't listen to them.
