How do you use the term " its like saying you want a peanut butter bread without peanut butter and bread"

Question:how do you use that term

Answers:
People use phrases such as this when they want to illustrate how nonsensical someone is. I've heard the phrase this way.

I don't understand you at all. It's like saying, "I'll have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Hold the peanut butter and the bread."

I think I remember Steve Martin, the actor, comedian and writer, delivering this line but I haven't been able to source it.

Here's a quote from him along these same lines:

“Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.”
~~Steve Martin

Good luck. I hope this helps.
I wouldn't use that term...it's confusing and makes no sense!
are you wanting to say something similar to
"You can't have your cake and eat it too" ?
