Like maybe the person felt so at one with nature or their surroundings, they could sense some sort of 'feelings' or 'emotions' emanating from every living thing, even the plant life?
My interpretation is that the tree is in a place where it is struggling to survive. Possibly it doesn't have enough water, there is pollution, not enough sunlight, etc.
