Question:Does anyone know how this phrase originated?

Answers:
A hand basket is just a basket without a handle. The phrase means things are going bad without much grip. The saying is believed to be from the 20th century.
i never heard of that quote but it dosen't sound to nice.
In some parts of the country, that phrase has evolved in to, "Going to France in a handbasket."
