IT HAPPENED that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook.
As he crossed the brook, he looked down and saw his reflection in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also.
He made a snap at the reflection in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen again.
Moral: Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
I think it mean : you lose something that you have for sure, for exchange with nothing because you atract to something not real. You let bird in your hand fly aways, because you want another bird that fly free in the sky.

It sounds like the "substance" is anything of real worth, whereas the "shadow" would be your expectation. Kind of like if you play on a basketball team, you would want to win the championship. ..sometimes we are in such a hurry to do something that we miss a small detail that makes it vanish in a snap. When we think that one thing may not be important, we tand to just "grasp the shadows" or think we had it but eventually turn out to be not the real thing..
