How would you explain the quote "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"?

Question:I get it but don't really know how to explain or define it.

Answers:
Your enemy and their enemy share a common goal, destruction of the same enemy. To which you have assigned such a high importance that you will gladly work with anyone to accomplish that goal.
Or with us or against us!
Shows a shallow person making decisions based on others experiences and not their own.

I am sure that is not the standard meaning however,
I agree with cyber_phobic's answer.
Look at it like the USA and the Soviet Union in WWII. We didn't like them and they didn't like us. But we both hated Germany more than each other. So we put aside our differences and joined together to beat Germany.
Then we went right back to hating each other.
their enemy(as in your enemy) and you are friends, making both you and your friend enemys of that enemy.
