Gallaudet is a Deaf community. For the most part the Deaf community believe that deaf people should sign, and forgo any technology, such as cochlear implants of hearing aids. Although Jane was deaf (meaning she couldn't hear), she was not Deaf enough for Galludet. She did not learn to sign until she was 23, and although she signed fluently, the community had a problem with the fact that she was oral.
