What was wrong with Jane K Fernades, that Gallaudet students did not want her?

Question:She's Deaf, so I don't understand the big uproar.

Answers:
Gallaudet is a Deaf community. For the most part the Deaf community believe that deaf people should sign, and forgo any technology, such as cochlear implants of hearing aids. Although Jane was deaf (meaning she couldn't hear), she was not Deaf enough for Galludet. She did not learn to sign until she was 23, and although she signed fluently, the community had a problem with the fact that she was oral. This happens a lot in the Deaf community, where oral deaf people are shunned. They felt that she would not know their needs, as she was not truely a part of the Deaf community.
