Should behaviorally challenged children be placed in alternative schools or separate classrooms?

Question:I think they should be placed in separate classrooms (separate from the disabled students) in the regular mainstream school. There is NO need for alternative schools. Alternative schools are just a bunch of snobbish mainstream schools that think they are better than everyone else. At least private schools don't do this. They have a different curriculum for a different reason. But alternative schools don't.

I think that this is VERY inappropriate. This is against the "least restrictive environment". Alternative schools does not justify as the appropriate program for them. They are simply schools for ALL children to attend. Alternative schools provide a choice either attending the mainstream school OR nontraditional school. Alternative schools do not meet the needs of special needs students. And I am so angry whenever schools suggest alternative schools as the BEST placement for behaviorally challenged children.

Answers:
Hi Jessica. Yes, I agree with you once again.
Your thoughts are exactly why I feel you should become a TEACHER or COUNSELOR for kids with disabilities. Maybe everything you have been through has been for a bigger purpose...that of teaching.
Children that are behaviorally challenged, should be placed in a seperate classroom from the disabled children. It is extremely frightening for a child with disabilities to see the kids go off and not know what to do. PARENTS of these behaviorally challenged students ALSO need to step up and get more control over their children. It seems that the parents of the kids that upset the classrooms, don't get involved in these classrooms. That is totally unfair for those of us parents that participate all the time & help our children that have disabilities.
We are presently training one of our Shelties as a Therapy Pup for use in the school system. We cannot wait to see how the kids respond to him. It's alot of training, but if the children respond, it will be well worth all the effort.

Usually kids with behavioral issues can be mainstreamed. But, there ARE kids who cannot handle that. In that case, it's not least restrictive to put them in a usual classroom. In fact, they will lack support and the class is actually restrictive to them.

I have had such cases where I teach.
I think that they should be in a different classroom or school. (I think that the school change should only be in extreme cases) I don't think that any child has the right to take learning away from the other students, or put them in fear. Now, if the behavior isn't one that would distract the remainder of the class, I think it should be the parent's choice. Most children with behavior problems or learning disabilities work better in a smaller setting.
