What type of learning style is this?

Question:My son, who is exceptionally bright and probably mildly autistic) likes to observe and process before he tries new activities. You can watch his face and see him absorbing information . . . For instance, (he's four) he has watched me write for months on end but refused to pick up a pencil . . . today he just wrote his name without me asking . . . he just did it. He also refused to swim . . . this summer we would go to the pool and just sit on the edge and dangle our legs and he would watch the other children . . . last week he just started to swim. What is this called? I would like to purchase a book to help me understand how to "teach" my child at home . . . Specifically, what are the best methods or innovative techniques for this type of learning. Thanks. I am not a teacher - just a parent - so please spell it out for me . . . do not assume I know anything. Thanks.

Your son sounds like a Intrapersonal visual learner. He learns by observing others. However, just because he is a visual learner doesn't mean that he doesn't use other learning styles. Most people use more than one method.

Has your son by identified as having a disability or is that your feeling? If you haven't had your son evaluated for a disability and you feel he should, talk it over with your doctor. The doctor can give you referrals to a doctor that can run some test. There might be nothing wrong with your son, he just does things when he is ready to do them.

If you have information from the doctor that indicates that your son has a learning disability, identify him to your school district. He might be able to attend preschool for a half or full day. To identify him to your district make a call to either the special services office or the preschool program. If he is accepted, then he may attend school to help with learning readiness.

If you are planning on home schooling, I would suggest that you join a home schooling list serv on yahoo or locate a home schooling network in your state or county. Some networks help new parents with the process of setting up their home school program.

If you can afford a private preschool setting, you might want to explore the Montessori approach.

Even if your son is a visual learner he should be exposed to the other methods. The world is visual but it is more a kinetic world. We are often asked to perform tasks outside our learning style so it is best to have all methods shown and used.

The links below will suggest some activities that might support your sons learning. You can also Google activities for visual learners, teaching visual learners, concepts that need to be learned for preschool and Kindergarten.
