I teach Special Education, but didn't get my first degree in Education. Because of the shortage of special education teachers, many schools (mainly middle school) will hire someone to teach ( you have to meet or fill some qualifications) on an alternative license, given that you have a specified time period to go back and get certification to teach, pass your state boards, etc. If you are not 100% sure this is the career for you, go observe in a special education classroom, or check out the possibilities of becoming a special education teaching assistant. That is a good way to get your feet wet without taking the dive. I'd check with your state requirements and local school board for openings and go from there. Also make sure to check out all the different areas in special education. I love my job, it is very rewarding, but there are some types of special education classifications that I have NO interest in teaching. Good luck!!!
