I am not a speechie but I work as a teacher in a school for autistic primary aged children and have liasons with speechies re'communication skills and development for students I work with.
In this setting, the speech path devises strategies (in ths case Picture exchange) or PECS, to help the students develop communication methods for everyday life.
Speech pathologists also conduct assessments and can help with lisps, stutters and other communication issues...
Hope this helps a little.

I'm a speech pathologist- right now I'm working for a pediatric hospital, but I've worked in the public schools, and in an adult acute hospital facility. If you want to know generally what a speech pathologist does, we work on fixing problems that occur in the head and neck region- our scope of practice covers swallowing disorders, traumatic brain injury, developmental delays, articulation disorders, language disorders, apraxia, aphasia, cleft lip and palate, the list could continue. Please consider researching more on www.asha.org.
