Please give examples of what children with an auditory processing disorder might have delays in.?

Question:For example my daughter has problems with comprehension and does not understand jokes.

Answers:
Difficulty with reading, comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary. Problems carrying out multistep directions, trouble remembering information and paying attention. Need extra time processing information...there's plenty of websites with tons of info.

There's a great book called Like Sound Through Water that's a non-fiction account of a family trying to diagnose the disorder. It's a great book, I recommend it.
Sarcasm and figurative language can be difficult for a person with CAPD. She may have delays in any area of language, and should be evaluated by an SLP in your school system. Everyone is different, so even though there is a long list of educational implications for students with CAPD, she may not have most of them. Many of the modifications and services for students with CAPD are similar to those of a student with a hearing loss. Your daughter should qualify for SLP services, auditory training, and a teacher of the deaf. I would suggest you strongly urge her school system to provide these services. An SLP can help her with language goals such as comprehension and jokes, an auditory therapist can help her develop her listening skills, and a teacher of the deaf will be her advocate for the large classroom. A teacher of the deaf is much better than an aide, because she will be trained to help your daughter with any problems that might come up, and most times can spot the troubles that she has due to her CAPD before anyone else. She will also be able to recommend services and equipment, and will be able to troubleshoot any equipment she does use in class. An FM system is highly recommended for use in the classroom. Best of luck!
Children with auditory processing disorders have difficulty taking in and understanding information that is verbally presented. This is the old fashioned way of teaching, lecture. A child with this disability needs to have a graphic organizer or a set of notes when listening to directions or trying to derive meaning from spoken language.

Provide visual supports for all information presented verbally.
