Please help me decide what test I would like the school to administer for auditory processing disorder.?

Question:I believe my daughter has an auditory processing disorder. She is in the second grade and the RSP teacher is talking about giving her a test. Is a full evaluation a good idea? Should I request a different test and if so what?

Answers:
She will have to have a full evaluation because in order to qualify for special education services she will need a discrepancy between her ability and achievement, as well as having a processing disorder.

Here are my standard tests I use for pretty much every psycho-educational assessment I perform:

WISC-IV (ability)
WAIS-2 (achievement - given by my ISP (or RS) teacher
TAPS-3 (auditory processing)
TVPS-3 (visual processing)
Bender-Gestalt (motor)

If a discrepancy between ability and achievement is not found, but if found to have a processing disorder nonetheless, then the IEP team can make a team decision to qualify your daughter.

For auditory processing your district might might use instead of the TAPS-3, the CTOPP (I just like the overall scope of testing and the higher validity rating of the TAPS-3).

Good luck to your daughter.
There are not that many single good tests for CAPD. If the Speech Specialist were giving the test, I'd have more confidence. Otherwise, the best test would probably be part of a complete evaluation: something given by the Speech Specialist, the School Psychologist, the School Nurse, and the RSP teacher.

That way you might get results from:
A thorough classroom observation
The IQ test given, or alternative cognitive test;
The Test of Language Development (TOLD)
The Test of Phonological Processing (C-TOPP)
The Woodcock-Johnson Achievement Tests and
A hearing test from the nurse, for example.
CAPD is evaluated and diagnosed by an audiologist. Tell your school that your daughter needs a full audiological evaluation. The audiologist will rule out a hearing loss, and either assess your child or recommend what tests the school district should give her. Please do not do this yourself. Take your daughter to an audiologist and go from there.
The only person qualified to test for Auditory Processing disorder is the school psychologist. The resource teacher does not test the psychological processes. Since she already has Resource, you might ask the school psych to go over the psychological testing that has already been done. This testing was done to get her into special ed. Usually they give a test like the Woodcock Johnson Cognitive to test for process deficits.
