You have to learn enough math to pass the basic skills test that most states require for teachers. I'm in California where we have the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). I learned enough Algebra to pass the test then promptly forgot it afterwards (I also am an English teacher). The study guides available are really close to the test and it's easy to learn enough to pass it, but you do have to invest a little time.
In order to become certified, you have to pass a Basic Skills Test. There is math on it, but it doesn't go past simple geometry.
