it depends on how you as an individual learns. we all learn different and need to do things different to get the results we need
I say hands on, but only by a relyable source or some one who got it from th book.
It depends on the thing in question. With something relatively safe, like playing a computer game, learning hands-on is just fine and would in many cases result in faster learning than just reading about it without trying it. On the other hand, with something dangerous like driving or rock climbing, it is a good idea to learn a great deal by reading about it so that you minimize the risks when you start going out and trying it hands-on.
definatly hands on learning is the way to go it proves you can use what you learn outside the classroom!
Depends upon the persons learning style.
I am a visual learner, so I prefer to "see" what I need to know.

it all depends onthe person
whether they are a theoretical, a visual or a kinesthetic learner
to try to tech a visual learner by a hands on method or vice versa just provides frustration all around
learn about the person, then learn HOW to teach them
People have a number of preferred learning styles. They include visual (the most popular), auditory and kinesthetic. There are others, but these cover a great deal of the population.
I learn best with a simultaneous visual and auditory presentation, though I will get bored if some hands on or interactions with other people are not included in the lesson. I learn easily from reading, but have to take notes to remember. This is not the case for everyone. Some people need hands on.
Hands on learning tends to help people remember what they learn better and is essential for kinesthetic learners.
The old lecture style is effective for traditional college learners, however, you will see them taking notes because the recall of information that is presented verbally tends to be easily forgotten.
I would say hands on for most people because you can have first hand experiences with learning and it can be more interesting, causing people to pay attention. But it really depends on the person.
