Looking for tests to determine reading and math grade levels?

Question:I'd like a boy I'm helping out to do something like a standardized test at the beginning of this year without it becoming an official part of his records. (I'm in Canada.) I can't do this through the school board, naturally, and I'm not eligible to purchase the Canadian Achievement Test or the Canadian Test of Basic Skills.

I've found some sample or released state-based tests online, but they are for specific grade levels and don't actually determine the grade level of ability. Is there something else available? I don't want to be paying for some outside source to mark the tests or anything like that; I just want something informal to give me an idea of where he's at.
