IQ tests the new vanity scam. What do you think?

Question:I recently noticed a question on IQ and nearly everyone who answered was at genius level. While there could be some lying going on, I think it's something else. In poetry, there is what's known as a vanity press. The writer thinks their work is being published on merit, but ultimately the press just wants to sell them a book. I'm wondering if IQ tests, specifically online IQ tests are a new type of vanity press.

I've done extremely well on some of these tests, but I don't take it seriously the scores seem artificially inflated especially if you consider real thinkers (i.e., Einstein, Kant, Newton, etc). Just like with the vanity press: We can all be published. Everyone's a genius. The fact that these tests usually want you to buy something makes me suspicious of them. Oh, and if everyone is a genius, no one really is. What do you think about these tests?

Answers:
You are probably right. I have been thinking something like that myself. My result on tickle IQ-test was very good, and I have been tempted to take the mensa test to check if the internet test I took has anything to do with reality. But then again, why? I am quite aware that I am no genius, and sometimes having the boost of my "vanity IQ" really does help me feel good about myself. I consider myself pretty balanced but not every day is even good. Nowadays life is so much about competition and we get compared with each other, it is nice to have this above average digit to think about. I never brag about my stupid test results, I would feel ridiculous doing that - no matter if they are for real, or not. Very possibly I would not post that result even here, anonymously.

Now I should ask what this all means. I have already told you my result was good - so that might count as bragging, even though I did not mention any numbers. And why does that test make me feel good? So I do think intellect is something to be proud of - Do I also think that being intelligent makes somebody a better person? I don't know. I think we all humans do have the same value. A human life is invaluable.

Also, I do know that the vanity IQ doesn't make me happy. It doesn't boost me everytime. I don't think about it very often, not every day, not every week. What I need to be happy is minimum financial security so I or my family don't need to be scared of the future, friends and family, something meaningfull to do in my life, and health. I am sure that stupid and clever people both can be happy or unhappy - the same way happiness in not a consequence of being beautiful or rich.

So what if people are fooled into thinking they are intelligent? That might even make them perform better in school and work. As long as they are not fooled into buying stuff by it...(I know, some will be). As a woman I know very well that THINKING I am beautiful sure MAKES me beautiful.

And as we are on this, I have been thinking about EduQnA.com as well. Why do we like to hang out here? There are people, there's a connection, sure. But does it make us feel a bit clever, too? That people would want to read our opinion about everything? Or that people want to answer our question about - well nothing in particular. Take my answer to your question, as an example. Very long. Do I really think people will give their time to read this? Maybe I find this answer so clever they will. I will never know.

If I really think about it I must confess I think human exchange has a lot to do with making each other feel good about ourselves. I love my friends because they ARE amazing - but also because they get the best out of ME, they make me like myself too. And they tell me they appreciate me, even.

So I want to finish by thanking you for asking your questions, posting your answers, and reading until here! I appreciate it, and I think you have a lot to give!

I gave you a star that will make you feel intelligent ; )
you have a good point, but then most people who take an IQ test voluntarily are the brighter ones - you wouldn't take one if you thought you were a moron, it would be embarrassing!
I never thought of this before, but I bet you're right. I have noticed that people all generally report their IQs as pretty high on here. I know my score wasn't too shabby when I took one of those tests but as you said who knows how accurate it was.
I would agree.
When I was a kid I was subjected to a real I.Q. test and it ran for about 5 hours. It was very difficult and I remember thinking that I would NEVER voluntarily do that again. I saw one of those on-line tests and the average time is 30 minutes.
It's like having a rigged Rocharch test.
I think that they're part of the "fun" of the net, and hold no substantive weight.
You mean I'm not really a genius?! That makes me sad. This question has ruined my self-esteem.
You are correct. People want to be tested, judged and flattered. That's why we're on EduQnA.com as well: we get points, we can 'win' best answer.

There is a machine at one of the local bars here that has a punching bag, and gives you a score. The fact that people are being scored with a number they can compare to other people's scores causes them to put dollar after dollar in that machine.
Yes, I've taken these IQ test also and scored genius. I did not take it seriously, but more as fun and games. It's a good exercise for the brain.

If a site is soliciting merchandise, then be alert.
