How do I prepare my second grader for G.A.T.E. testing?

Question:My daughter is taking a Gifted and Talented (GATE) test with her class and I would like to help prepare her for it. The program coordinator said there isn't any way to prepare for the test, either she's "GATE material or not". I suppose this may be true, but I'd like to at least find some sample questions so I can see if this is an accurate statement.

Answers:
I remember that test clear as day. I took it only 7 years ago, but this is what it is. On each page there is a certain shape, (shaped like a baseball plate) and each one has a certain pattern. You have to match patterns to other patterns. If you have ever been to "tickle.com" and taken the "classic IQ test" some of the questions are similar. Basically, it challenges your child at perceiving and matching patterns. If you can, try to get her to practice with puzzles, and use things such as "If glove is to hand, then shoe is to:" and then let her answer. The entire test is patterns, so know that.

I agree with her teacher..she shouldn't be 'prepared' for a test that is suppose to test her natural learning abilities. Gifted and talented naturally, not by studying..that is what they are looking for. You could be setting her up for failure otherwise....school is hard enough without putting pressure on our young kids. You know your children, if she excels already, then most likely she will do just fine. Don't force it. ♣ ♦ ♥ ♠
Well ours is called GT.And i'm in it.You can't be trained to do the test. You have to know that your child's teacher[s] has taught her well enough to know everything. It's not hard at all you only get in to to GATE is if your daughter thinks a smarter way than other students.I should know I made a 97 on it.For instance, you're playing a game and you're subject is a four sided shape your opponent will obviously say SQUARE then you say POLYGON or QUADULATERAL!! So there you have it!!
WEll..her teacher is right...I was a GATE student all throughout gradeschool. THe best advice I could give to you is have faith in your daughter. GATE testing isn't on any one or two particular subjects.Mostly on a childs comprehension and ability to express in writing with structure. Math also...All dealing with a childs comprehension...Usually questions will be set up by teaching and showing something new, then she has to remember it and apply it later on in the test without being able to go back to reference. Her Science and Social studies Skills will be tested but only very basic, GATE testing in different regional areas always vary on their setup. But overall it is to see if your childs comprehension on subjects and ability to absorb or further explain what they've learned is Above average children in her age. If anything....try asking her about previous conversations..Try harder math with her.see if she gets it or likes it. GATE students after passing w/ high enough scores come into the program and don't have to spend as much time on learning specific subjects as average children do, so they get the benefit of getting to learn and gain experience physically, or hands on. They also get more projects. Also try doing activities with her that encourage her to think...Thats the best advice I can give to you
You shouldn't "prepare" for this test. It measures her ability and if you "train" her about the subjects, then she will know how to do them and they will probably be something advanced that not everyone in the class should know so I would just tell her that she isn't supposed to study for this test and leave it at that.
Usually the "exams" given for GATE programs are very similar to IQ tests. Like the program coordinator said, you can't prepared for them. It isn't possible to raise your score. Just make sure that your daughter is happy and healthy that day so she doesn't make any stupid mistakes.
I took that and got in, but there isn;t really a way to prepare, because its not a knowledge based test, its critical thinking. In my elementary school, you had to be recomended by a teacher, and even then, only 1/6 of the kids who took it got in.

In my school , about 1 in 35 kids was in gate.

I wouldn't worry about it. It is basically a class that chalenges kids who are not being chalenged in their grade level classes.
