The best way to improve vocabulary is to read. As you come across words that you are not familiar with, look up the definition. This is truly one of the best ways to expose yourself to increased vocabulary and RETAIN it.
Read a thesaurus (I'm not joking). Just pick one up and check it. You'll retain a lot of information. It worked for me.
