If you are looking to work to pay for your living expenses alone, it's possible, but if you expect to cover tuition fees and all other expenses, it will not be possible. You are only allowed to work 20 hours a week, and the job you are likely to get is usually minimum wage type of work, like waiter/waitress.
Cheap accommodation is available in the form of shared houses or flats. You'd normally share with other students. You'd find the cheaper places further out of town (so that may mean higher transport costs).
Home-stay is a great way to start your stay in Melbourne, you can find out a lot about the city, getting around and what's where, from your home-stay family. It's better to try to get a family that hasn't been doing home-stay for very long though, as they won't be 'just-for-business' types yet.
If you are thinking that it is time to create some extra income, congratulations. The best thing working from home is that, we can either work part time or full time.<!--There are literally hundreds of ways to do just that. So what are the ways of making money online ?

G'day,
Spot on for first answerer.
Just to add some more info:
1. Work permit is max. 20hrs during study period and full-time only during semester holiday period. So you can imagine that you can't even rely on income from Australia even for your day-to-day living expenses. Please budget yourself carefully. I've included some general expenses info for a typical international student living in Melbourne.
2. The cheapest in the long term will be to rent a flat. The initial setup will be high, since you have to buy your own furniture & kitchen utensils, but you can share the cost & rent together with you flatmate(s). Homestay & living in uni dorm has lower setup cost, but the monthly spending is higher.
Hope this helps. E-mail me at mikegun(at)studentfirst.com.au if you have more questions abt study in Melbourne. Good luck on your study and welcome to Melbourne :)
