Hello.

Yes, finding friends can be difficult. You don't say, but I'm gathering you are in college from your question.

The first thing to do is go to the International Student Center. Most colleges and universities have something of that sort. There you will find lots of other people in exactly your situation. There also tends to be Americans there who are interested in International students.

Second, find something outside of class you like doing. It can be a club at school, church or other community group, or sports. You get the idea.

Third, limit your communication home. You may think that talking to your family and friends is a great cure, but it actually makes things worse. One or two good talks per month (and that includes internet chatting) is more than enough.

Fourth, get out there and talk to people. They won't care if your English is particularly good or not, as long as you can make yourself understood. But, don't expect everyone to make the first move ... it MUST come from you! Invite someone to join you for coffee in the student center. If you see a table with someone from one of your classes, ask if you can sit there.

Good luck .. friends WILL come, but you'll have to work at it.
Hi there,

I think I know how you feel. I am a Spanish guy, I have living here for 2 years, now I have friends and girlfriend but the first 6 months were a little bit difficult.

Even now I feel lonely sometimes, but now it is OK.
I know it is hard now but it will be better in the future, you have to patient.

Anyway, if you are studying English you can try to make friends in your class. Lot of students feel like you.

I know it is very easy to make friends from your country. It is ok to have 1 or 2 friends who speak your language, but I think it is not a good idea to talk all the time your language.

Another option if you have money and time is trying courses where you are going to meet English people, like photography or dancing... Another option I have tried is exchange in a pub or in Gumtree. You teach your language, and a English person or any other teaches you his/hers.

In my case I met my friends in my English class and in my house and in the house of my friends. It takes time but you will see that if you try you will make friends soon.

Good luck!
I understand. I studied in Poland last summer and while I found that the people were very nice I had a hard time making Polish friends. I had plenty of English speaking ones but I really wanted to make more acquaintances who spoke both Polish and English. I also had two foreign exchange student friends here in the U.S. during high school, one who was from Slovakia and one from Poland. They were here for 3 months before I finally found the courage to go talk to them. Now we will be friends forever and when I went to study in Poland I visited with them again; it was wonderful. So, I think people are really interested in you but they are scared to meet you. If there are some foreign language classes at your school, then maybe you could talk to the teacher and find out if she could recommend some students who would really like to talk with you. Also, I think joining some clubs or sports could be another way to join a group and find some friends.
