6 months no...12 months yes. Please make sure that your language school offers you an exam called test DAF (Deutsch als Fremdsprache or DSH. These will help you evaluate how well your German is. If you do pass one of the exams then you'll be ok when it comes to studying in German. Another thing is that Dentistry is not a social science .It wont be that hard because most of the scientific terms are in English or Latin. Just be positive and learn as much German as you can before starting school. You'll be fine :)
I'd say get something like Rosetta Stone to start out. If you can go live there before going to school, your vocabularly and fluency will improve out of simple necessity.
