What kind of gifts should I get my Italian host family?

Question:So I'm about to study abroad in Florence, Italy and I'm staying with a family. I'd like to get them a gift but I just don't know what to get them. I will be there for the semester so I'd like it to be special. Is there anything that isn't as readily available in Italy as it is here? Or any other suggestions?

Answers:
Hi!
I've been hosting kids for 12 years, and here are some of the things I've really enjoyed!

A cookbook! Try a local one (many churches or other organizations put one out). (If you do this, make sure to add an American measuring set!)

Are their kids in the family? Get them a Monopoly game. It's played the same all over the world, but the properties, money, cards, etc. are all different.

Teenagers? A T-shirt from your high school in the US.

A photo book of your city (if possible) if not, your state.

Make sure to take pictures of your home, family, city and school. Put them on a CD for them. One of the biggest gifts you can take is sharing!

Good luck and have a great year!
Ornaments are always a safe gift. They cover a range of prices, look good when displayed, can be put away if it/they are not needed or wanted and can be personalized with engravings or a little message stuck to the underside. Try to find something that reflects where you are from.
Have a great time!
