Road wear is questionable, particularly when compared to larger road-using vehicles.
Third-party safety is an issue, and has been recognized as a problem for quite a while. Manufacturers are working on this, though. Volvo's XC90 has solved most of the safety issues with use of it's lowered front end crash struts. In crash tests with smaller vehicles it rated very well. Many countries are penalizing SUV's through higher taxation and particularly for their excessive use of fuel.
