My question is a complicated one about guitar and theory, if somebody could please explain to me?

Question:the rule/formula on substituting an unavailable note for another note (such as playing the open g string together with the a note on the same string is impossible) i need to know if there is a formula to follow (like sharping a note, how you move up the fret board) if somebody could help me, i would be grateful, for some reason they skipped this in my lesson books. thanks.
