In which states can you teach without being certified?

Question:I have my bachelor's, but not in education. I'd like to find a teaching job, and then go back to school.

Answers:
Many private schools do not require you to be certified. Also because there is a huge shortage of special education teachers there are many districts where you can be an "intern" and teach as a special education teacher while enrolled and attending a certification program if you have a BA and pass a test.
Go to each states Department of Education website to find out the standards on teachers who don't have a teaching degree. The sites should give you information on how to get a license by alternative routes. If not... there are contact number on there and you can ask that way. Each state is different.

But you do have to be certified in the end thanks to the HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHER law brought up by the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT from Pres. Bush.

Here in TX, you can take an alternative program. Like, my cousin graduated with his bachelors under political science, and took ACP (Alternative Certification Program) and got the job as a teacher instead of going through the blocks and all that come with the Education degree.
There are a lot of states. Do as the first person said and go to the web site for each state and see what their requirements are. Some school districts will let you start teaching and pay for your schooling if you have a degree in something that they are in desperate need of.
Many states allow districts with high numbers of hard to hire open positions, more remote or smaller, rural districts and large urban districts to hire teachers with a bachelor's under emergency or provisional certification. This gets you into the classroom and allows you time to fulfill certification requirements and become HQ.
Check the Department of Ed web site in the state you're interested in for more information.
South Carolina also has an alternative certification program for those who have a bachelor's but are not yet certified to teach. It is called the PACE program.
In some states you can have a "conditional certificate" which expires much sooner than a regular teaching certificate.

Depending upon what you would like to teach, some school districts will pay for your master's degree in areas in which there is need (especially special education, science, math) while you work as a substitute and then transition into a teacher.

Because of No Child Left Behind, you may find getting a "teaching" job difficult. You may have to work as a substitute until you complete your requirements.

Contact your state department of education to find out what you need to do.

Good luck!
