I have had some friends write in neat teaching ideas to Mailbox magazine. That would look great on a resume and you could add the publication to your portfolio! One of my friends even made the front cover the other month. Get your creative juices flowing--and good luck to you!
I would go to the library or bookstore and take a look at the 2007 Writer's Market book. It will be a huge volume, and it will include magazines broken down by topic. For each one, it will list the writers' guidelines, which are the instructions for how to get published in that publication. The book will also have tips and samples for writing query letters, which are often required. It helps if you look at a copy of the magazine before you try to submit anything so you get a feel for that particular one. Don't get too discouraged if you get rejected, it happens very often. Just keep trying and you'll make it. Good luck!
