My son is starting kindergarten monday, how do I tell if his teacher is a good one?

In my opinion at that age if your son still wants to go back on tuesday then the teacher is a good one.
you should ask other teachers, or office staff how she/he is as a teacher.
depends if your son will come home complaining.
Volunteer to help out in the class for a day or two, so you can observe.
the teacher is probably good if they have teached for a while, but if you asre unsure ask other mums who have had kids taught by him/her. you can find out how they teach etc.
at a parent teacher conference, sometime if u meet her in public, or just ask ur kid how he thinks his teacher is fer a couple days but not in a row exactly.
Sit in on a class. I think that it's the only way.
I don't think that you will be able to tell on the first day, but maybe just ask the other parents. Some of them might have older children that had the same teacher. Otherwise, your child will let you know. Don't worry.
ask kids or kid's mothers if they had her as a teacher and see if she was nice. but if your actually really nervous, have a conference this weekend and talk to the teacher about how she teaches and stuff lol
Just see if she greets you nicely, see if she compliments your son, explains things, has a nice tone, etc. If she doesn't seem nice you should. transfer him to a different teacher.
My mom is a teacher, and she will meet a lot with the parents. If I was you, I'd call or email her and plan to get together one day after school.
Talk with her when you drop your son off. If you can, ask if you can stay and watch for a while. You can ask your son if he likes his teacher. Also, when you have parent teacher confrences you can get too know her.
all kindergarten teachers are really nice .. they are teaching/helping little kids ..
ask lots of questions about her. but try not to act like your to intrested. if he/she is young, she is probaly very sweet, ut won't have as much experience. that dosen't make her bad. just stick with her for a while unless problems start. if he/she is older. they probably are more experienced and stern. your child for sure would learn alot!! hope i helped!
the principal and/or the other teachers will NEVER tell a parent if there is a "bad" teacher. this goes against the whole teacher's union. there is no such thing as a bad teacher, just overworked, underpaid and under-appreciated teachers <according to them>
besides, you open your school/district up to a lawsuit if you even hint that there is a "bad" teacher in your school.

the best bet is to talk to other parents that have had this teacher before with their children. but remember-every child is different. some need a disciplinarian, some need the softer more nurturing kind. a good teacher can be both when needed. structured, but empathetic to each child's needs.
Thanks for the question. We just moved and my son started kindergarten. I have the same worries. But I know that the sub he has *his teacher is out on maternity leave) has everyone to help her. Other teachers especially.

So I am relaxing. Though it is hard because everything is so new and different here.

I think those who told you positive things are on the right track.
What is your definition of a "good" teacher?

All teachers now must be "highly qualified" in order to teach at their grade level. All teachers have their own style of teaching and doing things; this does not make them good or bad teachers. Many teachers will not accept a kindergarten position, so the teachers that do teach kindergarten want to be there and enjoy working with young children.

Make an appointment to talk with the teacher AFTER the first week of school (don't try to have an extended conversation with the teacher the first day of school--the teacher is busy getting all of her students into the room and does not have the time to chat). You can learn a lot about the teacher and her expectations during the conference.

My concern on the first day of school is how do I tell if the parents of my kindergarten students are "good" parents. Meaning, how do I know if they will work with their child at home on their skills and make sure they do their homework or if they will ignore homework and requests for conferences. So, as you can see, everyone is a bit apprehensive about teachers or students at the beginning of the year.

I'm sure your son will have a good teacher and that he will be a good student and that you will be good parents! Keep in touch with your son's teacher, help him at home, discuss problems with the teacher...its going to be a great year!
