Answers:
1. I wanted to share my love of theatre and literature with young people. Theatre has been a wonderful influence in my life, and I want to spread the joy!
2. I've been teaching about 25 years, with time spent as a substitute while my kids were young.
3. The best part of being a teacher is talking to my students and hearing their ideas.
4. A teacher needs patience, enthusiasm, commitment, and a sense of humor!
5. That's a tough one. I think I'd like to see more mentoring of new teachers by experienced ones. That would have helped me a lot when I was starting out. Some schools have that, but not all.
6. I followed the prescribed program of the university I attended. Basically, it was courses in general education, my major (theatre), teaching theory, psychology, methods, and student teaching.
7. I attended Southwest Missouri State University, now Missouri State University.
8. I currently teach freshman and sophomore basic English (a combination of literature and composition), American literature, college writing strategies, drama, public speaking, and film studies. That sounds like a lot, but some of those are semester courses. I teach six hours of a seven-hour day. I also coach the forensics team and direct the school musical.
9. I try to show my students ways that the content of my courses will be useful to them in real life. I also try to bring my own enthusiasm for the subject into the classroom.
10. Make sure you're going into teaching for the right reasons. It's a job you have to love, or you won't be able to stay with it. Love your subject, love the students. In fact, it's not just a job, it's really a calling. I started doing this because I felt I could make a difference in the lives of my students. I keep doing it because these students make a difference in MY life.
