When I was in college I double majored in Education and Classical Studies. I got the chance to go to a conference for teachers of classical studies. It was so interesting and combined my two passions. I learned Gregorian chant and how to sight read from two nuns, I learned tips on incorporating the use of ancient history and Latin to help teach content area and language, and got a lot of really cool ideas and free materials. I still use many of the same ideas that I learned at that conference, and have turned many people onto teaching the same concepts.
I am a teacher and long ago during a state convention for teachers the keynote speaker was Carl Sagan. His speech was the most riveting I've ever heard, yet it was down-to-earth at the same time. He was probably the smartest man on the planet at the time and his ability to speak the vernacular of the people present was amazing. I've always been happy that I did not miss that speech!
