First of all you want to remember that these kids are no longer in Kindergarten. So you want to raise the bar a little and not repeat too many of the activities they had in Kindergarten -- like circle time or calendar. You need to teach them your class rules, expected behaviors in different parts of the school. They probably didn't have music or PE in Kindergarten -- show them where it is. Talk about bathroom and library etiquette. Tell them what you expect from them. Use activities to assess just what your kids already know to introduce your "way" of doing things. This way you kill two birds with one stone. A lot of kids come out of kindergarten thinking first grade will be play time and they have a rude awakening. Show them their take home folder and talk about their responsibility in taking it home and returning things when necessary. Teach them to be responsible not to expect their parents to be responsible for them. You are setting the base for the next 11 years. There are hundreds of activities on the web -- type in "first grade lesson plans" or "activities for first graders" You will see all of what is out there --- or there should be opening activities in your teacher manuals to introduce expectations in subject areas. Good Luck

Calendar time each day. The students sit on the carpet and you go over days of the week, months in the year, seasons, counting, sight words, weather, and a daily sentence. One student is chosen to make an announcement about the weather or what the class is doing today and you write in correctly on the board. Have a fun pointer and sing songs. It's great to start each day with calendar time, about fifteen minutes each day, the repetition helps them a lot. Also for the first week go over about four simple class rules each day. Raise your hand, Stay in your seat, etc. That way you are reinforcing class rules and that will help your year run more smooth. You'll also be doing assessments the first couple of weeks to check mostly reading levels. The other kids can do fun worksheets or centers while you assess.
