Use of computers in schools. How are they used? Are they really helping to teach or babysit?

Question:

Answers:
I guess it depends on how they are being utilized. For instance; computer labs are usually set up with an approved program by the district that is designed to meet the children's educational needs in their grade level. There is usually a computer teacher or aide to assist the classroom teacher in the computer lab. These kinds of programs can generate reports on individual students, allowing the teacher to pinpoint specific weaknesses or gaps in learning, which can better assist the teacher in what curriculum should be covered or retaught in class.

However; unless it is strictly enforced, "in class" computers, like if there is a computer center in the room, can be teacher planned games. I have never seen a child just playing games without a purpose though. Usually they are educational games, and usually the children must take turns so they only get a few minutes a day on the in class computers. In this instance I would not consider it babysitting, unless the child was on the computer all day.

Hope that helps :)
I don't think they're being used to babysit. In my elementary school students are on the computers to learn how to type, research, use the internet, use programs, play educational games, etc. They are never used completely unsupervised or without a purpose.
