People outside of the education field may feel like my job as a teacher is to pass on knowledge/information on subjects such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. I certainly do that in my job. However, I see my job as preparing my students for life in the "real world". I also feel a big part of what I'm doing in front of that class is to empower the kids and let them know they can change the world by the things they do. I teach in a Title I school which means the majority of my kids qualify for free lunches and come from broken homes and bad places. I want to be a person (maybe the only one) in their life who cares about them and where they wind up in life. I know from experience that the basic knowledge I will be teaching is something they will hear over and over again. When I was in college, my daughter and I would be studying almost the exact same thing. Mine would be a little more in depth than hers (she's fifteen now and I graduated in '05).
Giving these kids hope is more important to me than teaching the water cycle. I know, I know, that's important to but what will get them farther in life....
Two Words: Better life, Better Job
the purpose is not to be a moron and end up a working class loser , just like somebody i know
The purpose of education is to provide students with the tools they need to become lifelong learners.
Lately -- unfortunately for most teachers -- society views school as a place where students should learn about morals, values, healthy living, sex education,-- as well as reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Where are parents in this picture? Teachers can't do it all !!
The purpose of education in a broad sense is to transfer knowledge.
If you are referring to the U.S. Public School system, I would opine that it began with a two fold purpose:
To transfer knowledge, and to transfer White, middle and upper class values. This was (is?) an economic necessity.
my personal opinion is that Private and public education after having instilled the 3R's should teach a student how to think coherently and how to be a logical independent learner.
