If a person wishes to live in the United States and work in the United States, then he/she should have to learn English. English is the language spoken in The United States and if I were to move to a different country, like Mexico, Spain, France or elsewhere, do you think that the people in those countries would learn English for me or would I be expected to learn to speak and understand their language in order to get a job or function in their society? yes...it is the most widely used language here... absolutely. it is our national language, and everyone who lives in this country should be required to speak and understand it. I think a basic understanding of the native language of any country should be essential if you intend to live there. Not only so you can be an active member of the comunity but for your own health and safety as well. English language alone should not be the only criteria to live in the U.S.A. or for that matter Australia, Canada etc etc. If you use the knowledge of English alone you are saying that several million people from India are eligible over 1 from France, Italy, Germany etc. for example. Is that the America you want ?? Yes Yes Yes. All of our grandparents had to learn English. They didn't parade up and down the streets waving foreign flags!! YES!! Have you gone on vacation to france, spain, or any other country where english is not their first language? Do you think that speaking english there is ok...forcing them to adjust?
I think its polite to have a basic understanding of the language to help you get around...but you don't have to have converstional skills.
And as for your question (which p*sses me off for reasons I don't understand) seems shallow and close minded. English is not the only language on this wonderful planet of ours. If you have a problem with people moving here from other countries and not knowing english, well get over it...you can't change things...and you don't know the reasons they had to move here. Kindness goes a long way...in all languages. Source(s):
