New york teachers - how do i get certified?

Question:I just graduated in May and received my BS in secondary education - citizenship. I am moving to NYC sometime in the beginning of 2008 (I'm from PA). Anyway, I was wondering how I would get certified to teach in NYC. I know in PA you need your Praxis, but I'm not taking mine because I'm not planning on staying in PA and I was wondering what I would have to do in NY to get my certification..also, how long will it take? Also, any other tips on teaching would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Answers:
I live and teach in New York. In order to obtain provisional (temporary) certification, you needed to have a bachelor's in education, and pass two tests, pass a couple of teacher certification tests.

I think you'll need to take:

CST -- Content Specialty Test (ex: Social Studies)
ATS-W - Test about teaching skills
LAST - Liberal Arts and Science Test

Each test consists of multiple choice and written sections.

And, of course, you'll need to fill out some long forms and send a bunch of money to the state to process your application.

In order to obtain premanent certification, you need to obtain your Master's degree within 3 years. You'll also need to complete a videotape of yourself teaching a 20-minute lesson to get your permanent certification

However, I think New York has reciprocity with Pennsylvania. In other words, if you get Pennsylvania certification... New York should automatically recognize it and grant you a NY certification. (You'll still need your Masters' to make it permanent.) Double check with New York's Department of Education ( http://www.nysed.gov ) and your college career center to be sure.

You also mentioned that you were looking for resume tips. A few thoughts--

- Look up sample resumes on the internet and model yours after the ones you think are the best.

- Try to include the name of the school or district you're applying to in the "Objective" line. Administrators will notice when a resume is written specially for them.

- Include your certification information (certificate number, subject areas, etc) on the resume.

- Make sure your resume is visually appealing. Include a little bit of color, if possible. Use bold face for the headings and regular font for the words below so it seems clear and organized... and so it stands out among the others.

- Volunteer work and experiences working with students is a big plus. You probably do not need to include much detail about unrelated jobs (McDonald's, Wal-Mart, and other unskilled jobs). They're looking mainly for successful experiences in schools, working with kids, and student teaching.

There's a good eBook that might be helpful to you. It has a chapter on writing resumes. as well as information about cover letters, teacher interviews, teaching portfolios, etc, etc. The book can be downloaded at: http://www.iwantateachingjob.com... Maybe it can help you.

Good luck!!
google teacher resume, you will find a great resume from Microsoft that is already formatted for you. All you have to do then in save it to your computer and change the information to your own.

I am trying to find a job in Michigan, so I can't help you with your other question.

Good Luck!
You will need to take a few tests to get certified in NY...you may be able to take one or two of them after you start teaching such as the Content Specialty Test, but you will need to take some before you start teaching as well (LAST etc.)

Also, you will need to get a Masters degree to continue to teach in NY. When I was there it was 5 years, but then it was changed to 3...it's possible it may have been changed back.

I suggest contacting one of the teaching colleges (Bankstreet, CW Pos etc.)...their education dept. should have all the answers you need.

As for the resume...

Teaching jobs are extremely difficult to secure these days...you need to make sure your resume and cover letter stand out. I strongly suggest you read ALL the articles on this site: http://www.teacherinterviewtips.com/teac...

Good luck!
Go to www.nystce.com and you need to take the ATS-W, LAST, and the Content Specialty Test those three tests you have to take, then the violence workshop which you can take online, the child abuse, you can take both of these online, your college transcripts, fingerprinting. You can start your online application by going to www.nysed.gov ...Good Luck! I hope this helps! :) :)
