My mother is a teacher at a school that may have a mold/mildew problem...?

Question:Her fellow teacher employees are very knowledgeable about it but are too scared to say anything, scared of losing their jobs. My mom is new so she knows she could easily be let go..
Every class has dehumidifier in it.. and on top of that, they told her 'noticed you got the new teacher cough'. Help with advice! Who could we contact 'autonomously' or get a mildew/mold test?!?!

Answers:
I don't think that is going to happen. I once worked at an inner-city school (old and poorly maintained) for a short time. The principal once commented about air "not good for us to breathe" in the classrooms.

Unfortunately for teachers and students who attend schools in poor condition, there is too much red tape, too much "bureaucracy" that not much can be done. This is a major-money problem and public schools usually get short shrift.

I would not bother with a mold test. The administrators know there is a problem - trust me. Regarding the "new teacher cough", that comment could mean that your mom, like all new teachers, catch colds and other bugs from the kids. They have not "built up" immunity yet (this is very, very common and does not necessarily mean she is coughing from mold).

My advice is basically do NOT worry. If your mother is not happy with the condition of the school, she can leave at the end of the school year and find employment at a safer, cleaner school.
I don't know where you live but honestly.EVERY school in Florida that I know of personally has a mold/mildew problem. It's just part of the weather here. Not much will probably ever be done regardless of what you say or do. If u are really concerned about it call the district and ask for their info. on safe working conditions.
