what do i have to study for?

If you want to be a teacher then you have to do a degree and then either a PGCE or another teacher training course (look on www.tda.gov.uk). Helpers or teaching assistants don't need degrees but they do usually need some qualification regarding children. You can get these at college or open university or somewhere. Work experience also counts so anything you can do with the age group you want to work with is good.
Avoid English language or literature, you won't stand a chance.
Special education - they offer this as courses and majors.
A teaching assistant/classroom assistant course at college, whilst doing a voluntary position in a local school.
go to uni and train
places like open university and other unis work with things like this good luck xx
You can get a job as a teacher's aide in special education or in regular education. A two year degree would help yo land the position but is not necessary. Volunteer a lot, it looks good on a resume. You can always volunteer in my classroom!!
Assuming you're starting right from scratch here (sorry if I'm backtracking a bit on your experience)...
Start with some work experience in a special school.
You'll need a teaching certificate which will entail either a BA Education or a degree followed by a PGCE, then you'll either need to go straight into a special school or work in mainstream and get as much experience in Special Educational Needs as you can (normally easy to get into as most teachers don't want to get involved in SEN).
Good luck.
