There are ALOT of online books out there for free downloads, hubbardscupboard.com, starfall.com, scholastic.com, brainfun.com. You might want to by a basic skills workbook as well, they go by grade level. I have seen some at Target and Walmart, but the ones available through an educational store are soooo much better. Try the Carson Dellarosa website for at-home work books for first grade. If reading is the only reason he was held back, focus on first grade reading comprehension, phonics, and words students should know by 2nd grade (which is like a decoding book---just working with individual words). You may need three workbooks to effectively work on all three skills. Good luck, and try to boost his self-esteem while you're at it! I know that repeating a grade can make students less excited about school, so reassure him he is a good, smart, kid!!
I don't know about dvd player, but if he can use a computer you might check out www.starfall.com
Also www.studydog.com is free for low-income families.
