What benefits for being a teacher do you get? How much do you get paid?

I'm in my 3rd year of teaching. I make over $40,000 per year. I also get a $1000 stipend for doing a specific job at my school - I am the person designated to complete all the federal and state paperwork for our ESL population. So at the end of the school year when all the paperwork is completed and checked, I get that $1000 "bonus." My school gives me $200 at the beginning of the year for school supplies. They also work my paychecks in such a way that I get a $500 check just before Christmas; it's not extra money, they just withhold that amount in a particular way, kind of like a Christmas club bank account - it sure is nice to have that. My school contributes $300 per month to my health insurance, which really helps. They also offer me other benefits that I can select if I wish (dental, vision, life, etc.). My district also has a FANTASTIC childcare facility for its employees. The workers are of a much higher quality than other childcare centers in the area. And I pay MUCH less than other daycare centers - probably about $200 a week less. I also only pay for the days that I am contracted to work. Typical daycares require that you pay them even while you're on vacation so your child's "spot" will be held. My daycare is only open when school is in session, so I don't pay daycare year round. I get a week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, a week for Spring Break, and two months during the summer - so three months off per year (that is, if I choose, there are other things available to me to make extra money - summer school, camps). I can also make more money if I sponsor a club or coach a sport, but I don't do that because I have two small children. My district also offers employee children priority placement in special programs - my 4 year old son is attending a FREE all day dual language pre-kindergarten to learn a second langauge. Although it is offered to the community, district employees are guaranteed spots. There is also much opportunity for career advancement, they provide me with training and professional development. To say the least, you get out of a job what you put into it - I love my job and I'm very positive about the situation so my school notices that and supports me.
I'm not a teacher but my teacher who has taught two years gets a salary of $40,000 a year.
First post is correct after a few years. Access to office supplies and equipment copy/fax machines, an ideal occupation if you have a side business. However, burnout is high and I would personally recommend you try a different occupation.
If you can survive and it's union you get job security (Tenure), two months unpaid vacation. The ability to sometimes take extra time off for travels (Sabbatical) and studies, retirement after 30 years with a considerable size pay check, health benefits.

One teacher I know who is two years away from retiring is making $50+ with just a BA degree and he teaches PE
Our pay scale runs from $32K - $60K in about 12 years, and to $80K after 25 years.

We get paid medical, dental, and vision insurance. Districts that don't pay benefits tack on about $10K extra.

The benefit is doing something I enjoy, and making a decent, if not extraordinary living
Taught 28 years with a masters and just now getting 80 K.
At one of the places I am looking at teaching at when I graduate, their pay scale is $37,000 for 0 years of experience. $38K for masters degree.
With seven years experience, I make abour $30,000 a year (at a private school). Benefits include insurance at no monthly cost to me.
