By theories, i mean how different theories have tried to explain what grammar is : prescriptivist.?

Question:descriptivist, transformational-generative grammar. what are the ones that are more useful to the ESL teacher?

Answers:
I'm not so familiar with the last term, but I am an EFL teacher. I like a combination of prescriptive and descriptive grammars though I obviously don't rely on grammar for instruction. In other words, I want them to understand what is right and what is in use.
I am also an ESL teacher, and I have never heard of these theories. Perhaps I should look into these, but they must not be that important to what I do. I teach 5th and 6th grade, so teaching the basic grammar rules is what's important.
