I have to admit that I come down very hard on them. If they are not getting any discipline at home, it has to come from somewhere. These students understand that in my classroom, they will be treated exactly as everyone else is treated and that I accept no excuses. I end up sending a lot of them to detention until they figure out that they will not be catered to and spoiled in the classroom. It's frustrating, though, because disciplining them takes away from teaching time and makes things harder on the other children.

The problem starts at home with parents who can't take a realistic look at what they are creating. I have many students who are spoiled and pampered. In my class they are not. I will tell them that I really don't care how they act at home, they will act respectfully ... etc to people here. I have parents who send their kids to school hungry and in dirty clothing, but by God their kids have the latest video games and even DVD players in their cars. It amazes me.
