The name Rama's Bridge originates in Hindu belief. According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, the bridge was constructed at Rama's request by his allies. The bridge was supported on floating sand rocks but the gods were said to have later anchored the rocks to the sea bed, thus creating the present chain of rocky shoals. It was said to have helped Rama to reach Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the demon (Asura) king called Ravana, who was then the ruler of Lanka.
The longest bridge in the world goes over lake Pontchartrain ... do you know how far the Island of Sri Lanka is from India?
It is true. The "Adams bridge" was actually called "Rama's bridge" which was built by the devotees of Rama: the monkey race. Their head being Jaambavaan, Sugreeva and Angadha, they wrote "Rama" on each stone and dropped it into the water so that it floats. The famous incident of the squirrel getting its 3 stripes originates from this. As a squirrel rolled rocks into the ocean, rama placed 3 fingers on it to give the squirrels the stripes. Thus, the devotees of Rama dropped stone by stone into the ocean and soon, Rama crossed the bridge across the ocean with his army and defeated Ravane and regained his wife, Sita. This bridge is called "Adams bridge" today.
