How many ants are in an ant hill?

Question:When walking today I found an ant hill. It was approx 3 feet high and 5 feet diameter. Black ants. Just curious does anyone know how many ants are in an average ant hill in North America.

Answers:
Well in every ant hill there is a colony of ants. There's the queen who lays the eggs and there are her servants: the worker ants (who are infertile) who look after her and builder ants build the hill and the passages in the hill, and the day-to-day running of the colony (whatever that may be). Then there are the guard ants who look after and defend the hill from invadors, especially predators, and then there are the 'nurse' ants who look after the baby ants.
There are many, many ants in every colony as you've discovered... so I believe that there would be at least 10 000 ants on average, in ant hills across North America. :)
5096889 now do not ask how do i know,it will be the second question.
it depends on the sort of ant...in Europe there is a super colony of S. american transplants that streches From Italy through France. A similar colony occupies most of California.
