Is Jack the Ripper the most famous Englishman in all of history, or is Dickens better known or Shakespeare?

Answers:
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Jack the Ripper is better known than Dickens or Shakespeare. You mention Shakespeare or Dickens to people and they might say "oh that is some old writer right?". They might even know that Romeo and Juliet is a piece by Shakespeare. However, you ask people who Jack the Ripper is. I bet they will be able to tell you that he is a famous serial killer that was never caught. He did horrible things...but horrible things are more remembered that pieces of literature sometimes.
Shakespeare, I would think. Dickens was an amazing writer, though. Shakespeare is seen is so many parts of our culture. Almost ever student in America reads at least one Shakespeare play (Macbeth or A Midsummer Night's Dream, usually). There are so many phrases that are still used from Shakespeare's plays. "To be or not to be, that is the question?" It has influenced the media, literature/plays, and cultures from all around. When most people think of reciting love poetry, Shakespeare is often thought of (or at least said: "What, you want me to recite Shakespeare or something?"). There are also Troupes and clubs labeled with his name.
I would think Shakespeare as his plays are widely filmed every year in different countries. Many people in other non-english speaking countries have heard of Shakespeare but not many have heard of Dickens or Jack the Ripper.
Shakespeare is better known
depends where you are putting them .. like if you asked someone about a famous english murdered .. then im sure jack the ripper would be up there .. if you ask about novelists.. then dickens would prevail ..

dickens is my favorite writer actually : )
I would say Shakespeare but John Lennon would probably be up there as well.
I would say that Shakespeare and Dickens are more famous
and that Jack the Ripper is infamous.
