Fire fighters?

Question:this question is to fire fighters. How do you become a fire fighter and what does it take to be one. thanks for your time

Answers:
Well there are multiple ways to become a firefighter, you can either go to a cumminty college in your area and get your firefighting 2 certificate, or you can pay for the firefighting academy nearest you. another way is to volunteer at your local fire department and see if they will send you to the academy. talk to your local firefighters and they can help you out more. I went to college for firefighting, took all my tests and am waiting to get a call from a department around Chicago for a job. It's how we do it up here. I volunteer when I can just to keep my foot in the door.

and to pink longhorn, I'm young and single and I can put out any fire you might have ;)
and which one of you are young and single?? i've got a fire i need putting out ;)
I can't speak for everywhere but where I'm located it goes like this:
1. City runs ad in the paper
2. Fill out job application
3. Get called to perform involving a written exam...basic logic questions, then a phsical test in which you pull a dummy x number of yards, climb a hook and ladder truck ladder in full gear to show no fear of heights, crawl through a blacked out maze-like tunnel in the dark...
4. If passed the above, then asked to hike a mile and quarter with a 45 lb backpack to simulate gear in a certain amount of time or less
5. If passed above, then you have a panel interview...why do you want to be a FF, what's your best strength, your weakness, etc...
6. If pass that, you are on.

I didn't make it past the panel...it was Sept.12, 2001 and I was not on my game on the questions since they focused heavily on the towers that day.
A paid department you have to get interviewed and go through a very challenging and rigorous training and you also have to take a written test that will ask you a lot of questions that have to do with working with the public.

if you want to get on a volunteer fire department then you should go to your local fire station and tell the chief that you are untested in becoming a volunteer, he/she will tell you that you have to come to some of the meeting and show an interest in the department and you may have a few fires that you are allowed to work on. after a while they may give you a pager and some gear, then you will be a member of the department you will probably be a probational firefighter for a while but you can still do the things they do you just have a member that you have to keep checking in with at the fires.

this is how it works in my town

i hope this helps you
